A wave of sexual harassment allegations against Suren, founder of Chennai’s The Dancers Club (TDC), surfaced over the past week, as dancers past and present shared disturbing accounts on social media. The group has since issued a public statement promising a “fair and just evaluation process.”
The first of the allegations emerged on July 17, when dancer-choreographer Shweta Painthamizh shared screenshots of conversations, purportedly between Suren and others, where he persistently made personal and inappropriate comments, even after clear objections. In another post, she alleged that Suren sexually harassed her.
Soon after, a cascade of testimonies followed from other dancers associated with TDC, some anonymous, others open, alleging a pattern of predatory behaviour. Several women said they were targeted while still in school, in their 11th or 12th grades.
Apart from Suren, co-director Anusha has also come under scrutiny. Several testimonies accused her of normalising harassment and making disparaging remarks about women’s appearances.
In its official statement, TDC said: “We take the concerns raised with utmost seriousness. As a professional institution that values human rights, integrity and dignity, we have initiated an internal review complying fully with the relevant legal framework.”
The group further added, “Since the inception of TDC we have not received any complaints directly from parents or dancers. For the first time, some disturbing information against TDC and Suren has been circulating social media.”
TDC clarified that any alleged incidents involving employees outside of business hours “were never brought to our knowledge so far,” and added that the institution “will not insert itself into employee’s private matters.” However, the organisation committed to taking appropriate steps if the inquiry reveals institutional failings. “If our inquiry brings to light any incident of violence involving callousness on part of TDC, we will not hesitate to take suitable action against the wrongdoer.”
“To uphold the principle of natural justice and to avoid any conflict of interest, Suren, currently serving as CEO, has been suspended with immediate effect, pending the outcome of the investigation,” the statement further said.
TDC also invited victims and whistleblowers to come forward. “We welcome any person who wishes to present their case before us. We deeply appreciate the continued trust, patience, and support of our community during this time.”
The organisation reiterated its stance, concluding, “TDC stands firm in its mission to foster a safe, inclusive, and empowering space for every dancer, student, and collaborator.”
