Chennai cops arrest one person in Anna University sexual assault case

A joint security review will also be conducted by the police along with the university’s security officers to improve the security measures, the police statement said.

The Greater Chennai police (GCP) arrested a man identified as Gnanasekaran (37) in the Anna University sexual assault case on Wednesday, December 25. The police said that Gnanasekaran was arrested with “scientific evidence" and another suspect is also being questioned. 

According to reports, the accused had filmed a young woman and her male friend on December 23 inside the Anna University campus. The survivor in her complaint said her male friend was attacked, and then she was sexually assaulted by the man. The assault was also reportedly filmed by the accused, who then used it to threaten the survivor. 

A case was registered on December 24 under Section 64 (punishment for rape) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the survivor’s complaint with the Raja Annamalai Puram All Women Police Station (AWPS). 

Following the assault, Anna University has also promised to put in place additional security measures on the campus. A joint security review will also be conducted by the police along with the university’s security officers to improve the security measures, the police statement said.
