Tamil actor Krishna was arrested by the Greater Chennai Police in connection with a drug case on Thursday, June 26. The arrest of the actor, known for films like Veera and Maari 2, comes after the arrest of actor Srikanth earlier this week in the same case. He was arrested after a lengthy questioning of over 17 hours.
In a press release, the Greater Chennai Police accused the actor of being a habitual drug user who purchases drugs from Jesveer alias Kevin, an alleged drug peddler. Kevin was also arrested along with Krishna on Thursday. The police recovered 0.5 grams of cocaine, 30 grams of ganja, two small weighing machines, a laptop, cell phone, as well as Rs 45,200 from Kevin.
Krishna was reportedly arrested on the basis of incriminating financial transactions and WhatsApp chat between him and Kevin. The press release stated that Krishna used to regularly buy drugs from Kevin and consume them.
Krishna’s is the latest in a slew of arrests made following revelations made by eight persons detained for a bar brawl in Nungambakkam, Chennai.
The bar brawl involved former AIADMK IT wing functionary Prasath. His arrest on June 22 led to the uncovering of a large network accused of crimes, including extortion and fraud and government job scams. Around 200 complaints were received by the police in connection with fraud committed by Prasath.
The confessions made by Prasath led to further arrests, including that of actor Srikanth on Tuesday, June 24. A Ghanaian national named John was also arrested by the police in connection with the supply of drugs. Prasath’s arrest had also led to the implication and arrest of a police head constable from Madurai city as well as investigations into two sub inspectors.
The police have arrested at least 24 people so far, including five people who were booked under the Goonda Act. The arrests have been made for large-scale government job fraud, land grabbing, extortion, illegal use of police information, and drug trafficking.
