A man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, sexually assaulted a student and attacked her male friend inside the campus of Anna University in Chennai on the evening of Monday, December 23. The young woman and her friend, both students at the university, were approached by the unidentified man and attacked.

The Kotturpuram J4 police told TNM that a case was registered on December 24 under Section 64 (punishment for rape) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the survivor’s complaint. The survivor approached Anna University’s Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) cell and lodged a complaint with them. The POSH cell also helped the survivor record her statement with the police since the assault took place within the university premises.
The case is being investigated by the Kotturpuram Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Bharathirajan and his team. The team of police officers is at the campus to examine CCTV footage to identify the perpetrator.
Demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, the Student Federation of India (SFI) protested outside the university gates on Wednesday, December 25. They also asked the state government to improve the overall security for students residing within the public university.
