A 27-year-old man set himself ablaze in Ambur, Tamil Nadu, allegedly after the police seized his motorbike for violating the lockdown norms. The man is currently undergoing treatment at the Christian Medical College hospital in Vellore.

Five officers involved in the incident have been booked, and an investigation is underway.

According to reports, Mugilan, who lives in Anna Nagar in Ambur town with his wife and three children, went out on the national highway on Sunday. As there is a full lockdown across Tamil Nadu on Sundays, Mugilan was reportedly stopped by the police, who were posted for vehicle checks on the highway. When the police asked him why he was outside, Mugilan reportedly responded unsatisfactorily and the police seized his vehicle. It was parked at a school near the spot where the vehicle check took place.

Though Mugilan requested the cops to return his vehicle, the police allegedly refused. Mugilan reportedly went back to his home and later returned with a can of kerosene. He then set himself ablaze in public. The policemen, who were shocked by this act, rushed Mugilan to the Ambur government hospital and then later to Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore.

Tirupattur SP Vijayakumar told TNM that Mugilan was shifted to ICU on Monday morning and is being provided the best treatment possible at CMC.

“We have withdrawn the services of the five policemen who were on duty at that time from Ambur town police station and they have been shifted to Tirupattur town police station so as to ensure free and fair inquiry into the issue. I have recommended a DSP from the district headquarters to probe the incident. An FIR has also been registered against the five policemen,” he added. CCTV footage from a location near the incident is also being scanned.
