The Kerala Police on Tuesday, March 11, conducted an evidence collection process in the Venjaramoodu multiple murder case, where 23-year-old Afan of Thiruvananthapuram killed four of his family members, his friend, and severely injured his mother.
Afan, who confessed to the murders on February 24, was taken to various locations, including his paternal uncle’s house, where two of the murders took place, and a shop where he purchased rat poison in an alleged suicide attempt after committing the crimes.
As part of the crime reconstruction, police first took Afan to his uncle Latheef’s house in SN Puram. According to reports, he explained in detail how he murdered Latheef and his wife, Sahida. Authorities also recovered the house keys, which Afan had discarded nearby after the crime.
Police also visited various shops where Afan had purchased a bag to conceal the hammer used in the killings, along with a cigarette and rat poison.
Earlier, investigators had gathered evidence from Pangod, where Afan allegedly murdered his grandmother, Salma Beevi. After committing this crime, he reportedly traveled to SN Puram to kill his uncle and aunt before returning to his home in Venjaramoodu.
On his way back, Afan picked up his friend, Farsana. Upon reaching his residence, he allegedly attacked his 13-year-old brother Ahsan, Farsana, and his mother, Shemi. While five of his victims succumbed to their injuries, Shemi survived and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The shocking incident came to light when Afan walked into the Venjaramoodu police station on February 24 and confessed to the murders. He initially claimed to have killed six people, including his mother. However, upon reaching the crime scene, police found Shemi alive but severely wounded.
Reports suggest that financial distress played a crucial role in the tragic events. Afan’s family was allegedly struggling with a severe financial crisis, and he felt neglected by his extended relatives. This frustration is believed to have led him to commit the multiple murders.
Following the killings, Afan attempted to take his own life by consuming rat poison but survived. The investigation is ongoing, and the police continue to gather crucial evidence to build the case against him.
