In a welcome move, Kerala police have introduced an all-women police team to ensure the safety of girls and children in Thiruvananthapuram from June 1.

Specially trained women cops will be assigned the ‘Pink Beat’ and will be on duty from 8 am to 7 pm. They will be present on public transport buses, bus stops, crowded areas, schools and places of worship. They will be supervised by City Police Commissioner G. Sparjan Kumar.

The women cops will also ensure that seats reserved for women and the physically challenged are not misused, and they will be keep an eye for any incidents of harassment against women in public places.

They will also assist women, children and senior citizens travelling on buses.

The Hindu reports that as part of the project, the two-member women police team will travel up to 1 km in crowded buses.

“Those deployed for the beat had been asked to contact the control room if they need assistance to nab those violating rules. The control room vehicle will rush to the spot to bring the culprits to the police station concerned to be booked. At least five buses will be covered during the beat,” Sparjan Kumar told The Hindu.

The assistant commissioner of police who will be in the control room would monitor the movements of the ‘Pink Beat’ teams.

The report adds that in the first phase, there will be 12 teams of Pink Beat.
