Young IPS officer set to take charge as DySP in Karnataka dies in road accident

The accident occurred near Kittanegadi village, near Hassan city, while Harsh Bardhan was traveling from Holenarasipura town to Hassan to report for duty.

Harsh Bardhan, an IPS officer on probation, was killed in a road accident in Karnataka’s Hassan district on Sunday, December 1. He was set to begin his role as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) in Hassan city on Monday. 

The accident occurred near Kittanegadi village, near Hassan city, while Bardhan was traveling from Holenarasipura town to Hassan to report for duty. The preliminary investigations revealed that while travelling, the tyres of the government vehicle posted with the District Armed Reserve burst and the car turned upside down and rolled over. Bardhan sustained severe head injuries and died later at a hospital, despite efforts from local residents to rush him there. The driver, identified as Manje Gowda, also suffered injuries in the accident.

The 26-year-old had recently completed training at the Karnataka Police Academy in Mysuru and reported to Inspector General of Police (Central Range) Boralingaiah. He was a 2022-23 Karnataka cadre batch IPS officer, securing 153rd rank in the UPSC exam and clearing the Civil Services exam in his first attempt. 

Originally from Bihar, Bardhan’s family resides in Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh. He had completed an engineering degree before joining the IPS and underwent training at the Karnataka Police Academy in Mysuru. Hassan Superintendent of Police, Mohammed Sujeetha, and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Venkatesh Naidu, visited the hospital. Boralingaiah IGP also visited the hospital and paid respects to Harsh Bardhan's body. He also gathered information about the accident.
