Congress President Rahul Gandhi said on Friday that he would send books written by Tamil social reformer EVR Periyar and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, so he can understand the people of Tamil Nadu. Rahul Gandhi, who was in the state for a slew of campaign events in Salem, Krishnagiri and Madurai, was speaking at a public rally in Theni where he made the remarks. He also said that the Prime Minister has no understanding of Tamil history and language.
He said, “Now there's one thing that really surprises me about Narendra Modi. He is convinced that he can run Tamil Nadu from Delhi, he is convinced that just because he can pressurise the government of Tamil Nadu, he can decide what happens in Tamil Nadu. I don't think this man has read anything about Tamil history. I don't think he understands the Tamil language and he certainly does not understand the Tamil spirit. I think I'm going to send him a book of Mr Periyar and tell him, "Read this, so that you understand the people of Tamil Nadu." Maybe a few books of Karunanidhi ji because the gentleman has no idea what Tamil Nadu is.”
Rahul Gandhi was campaigning for EVKS Elangovan, the DMK-Congress alliance’s Lok Sabha candidate from Theni. Elangovan is the grand-nephew of Periyar.
Invoking his poll plank for the state and referring to Modi, Rahul Gandhi said, “He does not understand that throughout Tamil history, only the Tamil people have decided the future of Tamil Nadu. He does not understand that there is no force in this universe that will make the Tamil people do what they don't want to do. With hatred and anger, you cannot make the Tamil people do anything. But with love and affection, you can make the Tamil people do anything.”
