DMK lawyers led by Saravanan Annadurai moved the Madras High Court to ensure the government gives space for Kalaignar M Karunanidhi's burial in Marina Beach, next to Anna Memorial.

The team of lawyers reached Acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh’s residence at around 8.45 pm on Tuesday night, after the state government said it would allot land opposite Anna University, in Gandhi Mandapam.

The team submitted a petition to the CJ requesting that he hold a hearing to decide on the matter as soon as possible. The Acting CJ agreed to hear the petition at 10.30 the same night.

A two-judge bench will be hearing the DMK's petition at 8 am on Wednesday. Tamil Nadu government is expected to file its reply then.

Earlier on Tuesday, MK Stalin, Alagiri and Kanimozhi, along with several senior leaders like TR Baalu, Duraimurugan and Murasoli Selvam, met Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami at his residence to request him to provide land to bury the DMK patriarch in Marina.

However, later, in a press release signed by Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, the government said that it was not possible as there are several ongoing cases against building memorials on Marina and this would lead to legal complications.

Kalaignar Karunanidhi, chief of DMK, passed away on Tuesday evening at 6.10 pm. He had been admitted to Kauvery Hospital on July 26, due to a sudden dip in his blood pressure.

Later, in the hospital, his condition stabilised, but due to a Urinary Tract Infection and age-related ailments he was under constant medical supervision in the Intensive Care Unit.

Hundreds of DMK cadre gathered outside the hospital as news of his death spread, and many of them could be heard chanting,”We want Marina.”

Earlier in the evening, MK Stalin had appealed for calm and requested the cadre not to indulge in any violence.
