‘We dream of making TTV CM’: New office bearers reflect Dhinakaran’s ambitions?

When AIADMK (Amma) Deputy General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran announced the appointment of 64 party office bearers a few days ago, it set off intense speculation on his intentions towards the party. While many read the move as Dhinakaran announcing his ambitions for a larger role in the party and possibly the government, TTV only claimed that he wanted to strengthen the party and the Jayalalithaa legacy.

In what seems like confirmation of the speculation, however, some of the newly appointed office bearers declared on Tuesday that it is their dream to see TTV become the Chief Minister of the state.

AIADMK (Amma) leader Nanjil Sampath spoke to the media, following a meeting of some of the new appointees with TTV at his residence in Chennai on Tuesday. He said that they have been asked by TTV to protect the party and its legacy.

Sampath, told the media, "The Deputy General Secretary told those members who met him, ‘We are on a mission to protect the AIADMK, the party which has earned the trust of crores of people and we will be victorious in this mission,’.”

Asked what challenges lay ahead of TTV, Sampath said, “The number of CMs in the state has itself grown. We have a dream to make TTV Dinakaran the CM of the state. We want the AIADMK to remain in power. We want to realise Amma's dream of the AIADMK being in power for 100 years,” Sampath said.

Sampath has been appointed as the Deputy Propaganda Secretary of the party. The list of 64 office bearers appointed by TTV reportedly includes 20 sitting MLAs, former ministers and senior functionaries of the party.

Three MLAs – K Palani, AK Bose and P Sathya – had declined the posts offered to them, however. Palani had said that he was happy with the post of MLA and did not need any new posts.

In 2016, Nanjil Sampath was removed from the post of Deputy Propaganda Secretary by Jayalalithaa for making insensitive statements about the 2015 floods.

Answering a question on a Tamil news channel about why the party was conducting a grand general council after the Chennai floods, Sampath had said that if there is a death close to a house where a wedding is supposed to take place, the wedding will still go on. He had also asked on another television channel, whether elephants will stop moving if ants are getting trampled.
