In a video that has spread on social media, a 31-year-old man can be seen being beaten up at a de-addiction centre by the staff. The man was later found hanging dead in his house in Nolambur on Wednesday. However, the man’s relatives allege that he committed suicide due to a family dispute.

The deceased man, Kuppusamy was a casual labourer. The video, in which Kuppusamy was beaten by staff of the ‘God Helping Foundation', was repeatedly played on TV channels and spread on social media on Thursday.

Anand, a neighbor of Kuppusamy told The New Indian Express that Kuppusamy was undergoing treatment for his alcohol addiction. However, he also said that Kuppusamy’s wife, Ammu, had left him after a fight about a week ago and that he might have committed suicide because of this.

Talking about the video, a relative said that he may have been assaulted because he was very strongly addicted to alcohol. However, physically harming someone for any reason was “inhuman”, the relative said.

The state chief secretary has ordered an investigation into the workings of the de-addiction centre.

Kuppusamy’s body has been sent for post-mortem to a government hospital. The Nolambur police station refused to comment about the case and said that a probe is on.
