A student of Sree Sastha Institute of Engineering and Technology at Chembarambakkam killed himself by hanging at his residence in Mogappair on Tuesday.

According to Deccan Chronicle, Gokul Krishnan was found hanging by his mother who had left the house at 7 am. There was no suicide note but his family said the second year student had nine arrears in college.

“Many other students had arrears received transfer certificates on Monday. One of Gokul’s friends who received a TC on Monday came home and showed it to him. Gokul was worried about getting a TC as he too had arrears,” said one of his relatives.

In another suicide in February this year, a private medical college student was found hanging in his hostel room in Kulasekaram, Kanyakumari district. 

The victim was identified as Paruthi Semmal hailing from Trichy. He was studying in the fourth year in college.

Soon after college authorities informed the police, they arrived and sent the body to the General Hospital for postmortem. Paruthi's parents, who were informed about the incident, rushed to the Kanyakumari government medical college hospital, where the body was kept.

After preliminary investigations, police said there was nothing suspicious about the death. Kanyakumari district superintendent of police G Dharmarajan said it was a clear case of suicide.

The incident took place at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences at Padanilam. College authorities said the student was found to have been under depression for long. They came to know about it from his friends"He was a very good student and has done all his theory exams in the final year. Only the practical exams were remaining. In another six months, after finishing house surgeoncy, he would have become a doctor," they said.

Police sources said two other students of the medical college too committed suicide recently. However, when contacted, college authorities were not available for comment. The superintendent of police said he assumed charge in the district three months ago and there has not been any suicide in the college during that period.

In another incident in Madurai, a private catering college student was found dead inside the hostel room. Police said he committed suicide by hanging himself. The hostel is on Chinnakadai Street at Goripalayam in the city.

The victim was identified as Kalirajan, 20, son of Muthu of Melur in Madurai district. Police investigation revealed that there was a dispute in the family and the student could not pay the college fee. A case was registered by Tallakulam police.
