A Class 10 student from Cuddalore municipality school lost his hearing ability in one ear after a school teacher allegedly hit the boy with a writing pad on Thursday for not wearing his school uniform.

Prathap, a 15-year-old, lives in Tsunami Nagar with his mother Praveena. On Thursday, Prathap did not wear his uniform pant to school, as it was wet due to the rain from the previous night. His mother Praveena told The New Indian Express that before hearing his explanation, physical education teacher Kamaal Basha hit the boy’s head repeatedly with a writing pad.

After this, when Praveena took her son to hospital, the doctors said that he had lost hearing ability in his right ear. Moreover, there was no recovery as one nerve had underwent severe damage.

Later, Cuddalore Chief Education officer R Balamurali visited the school and suspended the teacher. A case has been registered against the teacher on Monday at the Cuddalore police station.

“Initial inquiries established a prima facie case of corporal punishment. The physical education teacher was suspended pending a detailed inquiry,” Balamurali told The Times of India.

He added that he has not got any medical report and after getting it, he will take further action.

Police charged the teacher under Sections 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
