The Telangana unit of the BJP has rubbished reports that the prime minister ranked the newly formed state in the top position in a survey on the performance of all states and union territories.

BJP Spokesperson Krishna Sagar Rao lambasted the Telangana government for misleading people by about a non-existent survey.“TRS party has manufactured news which is baseless and deceiving. They give ranks and awards to themselves. How can they quote the Prime Minister?”

He said that the state unit had apprised the Prime Minister’s Office as well as the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting about the turn of events, and had submitted newspaper clippings and footage of television reports.

In the past few days, the Telugu media and a handful of English media reported that a secret survey purportedly conducted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ranked Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao number one in the country. According to the same reports, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was ranked 13.

Some of the news reports quoted TRS members who took the opportunity to praise Rao. Deccan Chronicle reported:

“TS sources said the novel schemes being implemented by Mr Rao such as Mission Bhagiratha, Mission Kakatiya and Haritha Haram etc., ensured that he was ranked the No. 1 CM in the country. They said that the PM and several Union ministers have on several occasions showered praises on Mission Bhagiratha, aimed to supply tap water to every household in TS by laying 1.25 lakh km pipelines by 2018 — the largest in the country — by spending over Rs 40,000 crore, Mission Kakatiya, aimed to restore 45,000-odd lakes by spending Rs 25,000 crore in five years, and plantation of 230 crore saplings to increase green cover in TS from 27 per cent to 33 per cent in five years, and have asked other states to emulate them.”

On social media these news reports generated a lot of congratulatory comments. Many people congratulated Rao on Twitter and Facebook.
