Ola Cabs seems to be making a minor contribution towards reducing the threatening pollution levels in the capital and NCR if one went by the reports coming in. Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives are expected to supply Ola with electric Nano cars that can be deployed in the city’s roads. The shell of the car will be supplied from Tata Motors’ Sanand unit in Gujarat and Coimbatore-based Jayem will fit thee electric engines sourced from Electra EV and the cars will be branded Jayem Neo.

The Neo’s electric engine would be a 48-Volt system and yield 17kW (23hp) output. The vehicle may weigh around 165kgs more than the regular Nano; however, the fact that it won’t emit any smoke will obliterate any other handicap.

The company also claims that car will be certified to run around 200KMs on a single charge; but, with 4 passengers seated and the air conditioner functioning this distance may come down to 140. The government has to do its bit and build the recharging infrastructure since for a vast city like Delhi this distance of 140KMs may not amount to much.

Jayem says the initial launch will cover only the taxis segment. In the second stage, the company will launch more powerful electric vehicles for the commercial segment. Jayem Automotives appear to have tested many models of the Tata Nano earlier before it has zeroed in on this arrangement, where Tata supplies only the shell and the other components including the engine and the transmission are sourced by Jayem and the cars released. This suits Tata Motors also, since they had taken a decision to stop the manufacture of the Nano model. Interestingly, Tata Motors has a R&D base in Coimbatore which is the base for Jayem.

Tata Motors has already signaled its intentions to move towards electric cars with its Tiago EV model already on the roads and the plans to launch the Tigor also with an electric option soon. Tata Motors may eventually launch a Nano electric on its own as well and it will have to contend with the Mahindra e2o already being used as taxis in Bangalore by Ola.

The Jayem Neo will be seen on the Delhi roads from the end of this month. Other cab aggregators may then start showing genuine interest
