Lady DSP’s shocking suicide: Is it linked to Dalit youth Gokulraj’s murder case?

If the fact that the main accused in the Gokulraj murder case is still absconding and using WhatsApp messages to incite passions in his community was not enough, the suicide of DSP Vishnupriya, who was investigating the murder has come has a shock, raising questions over whether it was linked to the murder. You can read all about the case here.

In a tragic turn of events, 27-year-old R Vishnupriya who was a DSP in Thiruchengode in Namakkal, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her official residence late on Friday afternoon. She was found hanging in her bedroom, according to reports.

Vishnupriya is said to have discharged her duties through the day, dealing with protesting teachers and discussing other cases with officials. In the afternoon, she left for her home and then stopped responding to calls.

Importantly, an eight-page suicide note is also reported to have been found. In the suicide note which The News Minute has seen she hint about job pressure and says that though she loves the job, she made a mistake and the guilt was troubling her. The suicide note found (the police are yet to confirm her handwriting) says that her suicide should not be linked to the Gokulraj case. "I was investigating a sensitive case.... media please don't create stories."

It is not clear as to who found her body hanging first. While some media reports suggest that it was the maid who found her hanging, others say it was a police constable who had come looking for her.

A TNSC Group-1 officer, Vishnupriya had assumed office just this February, and this was her first posting, but was aworking in the Secretariat in Chennai earlier. She was single and her mother is reported to have visited her often. She was a native of Cuddalore.

The cases could turn controversial and high profile, evident from the fact that several police officials including Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Salem Range, Vidya Jayanth Kulkarni, SPs SR Senthilkumar (Namakkal) and Subbulakshmi (Salem) and IG West Zone K Shankar visited the spot.

The fact that she was investigating the Gokulraj murder case has given way to speculations.

TNIE reports, “It is learnt that she had differences in official circles concerning investigations on the sensational murder of Dalit youth Gokulraj. Sources allege that several persons without having any direct involvement in the case have been put behind bars.” A PTI report hints at a family angle. TOI reports that she was unhappy about working in the police force, which could have led to the suicide.

The main accused in the Gokulraj murder, Yuvaraj of Dheeran Chinnamalai Peravai, is still absconding.
