With the two main Dravidian parties making their initial moves to tailor alliances, the one political alliance which was cemented in November 2014 is now showing signs of cracking under pressure.

Political circles are abuzz with murmurs that there is some difference of opinion between the main parties in the People’s Welfare Alliance, which includes CPI, CPI(M), VCK and MDMK over who will be the CM candidate.

This morning, there were media reports that a key member of MDMK and Vaiko’s close aide, Mallay Sathya, has raised hackles at a recent PWA meeting in Madurai when he said that Vaiko should be made the CM candidate of the alliance in the upcoming polls.

Sources in the MDMK say that Vaiko squarely refused to accept such a demand from his own partymen, but did not reject such a demand outright.

This incident gains importance amidst reports that in a meeting of PWA last week, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalan had proposed the name of Communist leader Nallakannu as the face of the alliance, which was opposed by Mallay Sathya. The VCK has since denied these reports.

Such disagreements within the PWA could throw up several problems. One, this sends across the message to Vijayakanth that his demand to be declared the CM candidate in return for joining the alliance is not going to be easy.

Two, these differences are likely to be exploited by the DMK and AIADMK – both would like to see the PWA scatter back into individual parties which will then be up for grabs.

On record, however, leaders in the PWA state that there are no differences within the alliance. “It is OK for members of their party to praise their leaders and reaffirm their faith in them, but the PWA has repeatedly said that we do not believe in announcing a single CM candidate and it is against the practice in Indian democracy,” says D Ravikumar, General Secretary of VCK.

There is however another theory which is doing the rounds. MDMK has been losing members by the hordes, and there is a strong buzz that Mallay Sathya, one of the very few strong leaders left in MDMK, is headed towards the DMK. And it is to bust such rumors that Mallay Sathya is bending over backwards to prove his loyalty to Vaiko.
