AIADMK spokesperson and former deputy propaganda secretary Nanjil Sampath returned to the ruling party on Saturday, four days after retiring from politics. He reconsidered his decision after meeting AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala in Chennai.

Speaking to Stalin SP of Puthiya Thalaimurai, Sampath said, “Because of everybody’s love I decided to return to party. I was compelled by everyone’s love to come back. Except my relatives, all my well-wishers and important functionaries of the party compelled me to reconsider my decision. They told me that my public speaking and work are required for the party. They urged me to go meet Chinnamma.”

Sampath had quit the party on January 3 and had returned the car gifted to him by Jayalalithaa for campaigning. Speaking of his meeting with Sasikala, the AIADMK spokesperson said that she had behaved generously towards him. “She asked me why I returned the car? I told her I thought it was not necessary. She said you work well, I was thinking I will send the car back to you, but you yourself take it now. I told her that I would work in a way that would delight her and the party cadre.”

Sampath had joined the AIADMK in 2012. Sampath, who is a fiery orator, started out his political career in the DMK, having walked out with Vaiko in 1993 when the latter started the MDMK.

In a letter to a Tamil magazine days earlier, Sampath had hit out at the Sasikala and Chief Minister O Panneerselvam for not condemning the raids in the Secretariat. He also said he was unsure about the freedom he would get in the party under Sasikala’s leadership, adding, "If Sasikala alone is qualified to become the leader, I do not have the qualification to accept her as my leader."

Following his meeting with ‘Chinnamma’ on Saturday, Sampath said, “I feel like I have got complete freedom after I met Sasikala. She said come, I was expecting you. She said I can be myself and work as I wish and gave me that freedom. Even though I wrote a letter highly criticising her, she has been willing to accept me. I see the heights of democratic spirit in her.”

In the interview, he also said that he did not require any post in the party and that he would continue to work as a spokesperson. He also expressed full faith in the new AIADMK chief’s political capability, noting that her response to the Jallikattu issue had made the opposition realise that she cannot be taken lightly.

“She has won the hearts of the party people in the way she has interacted with them. She has the physical strength and enthusiasm to function in the place of Amma. She will prove the party's glory in future,” he concluded.
