Salem, Krishnagiri, other TN districts to get heavy rainfall over next 4 days

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Salem districts and at isolated places over Erode, Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruchirapalli districts of Tamil Nadu. The IMD said that the southwest monsoon has set over South Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. The IMD also said that a low-pressure area is very likely to form over the north Andaman Sea and adjoining the east-central Bay of Bengal around May 22, 2021 (Saturday).

In Chennai, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies and changes with light or moderate rainfall over the next two days. The maximum and minimum temperature will be around 37˚C and 27˚C respectively, the IMD said. However, in north coastal Tamil Nadu, the temperature is likely to rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius due to the northwesterly wind.

On Friday, May 21, the IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places over Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Salem districts of Tamil Nadu. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Erode, Tirupathur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Tiruchirappalli districts as well. The IMD has predicted a thunderstorm with moderate rain at many places over interior Tamil Nadu and western Ghat districts. A thunderstorm with light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, IMD said.

On May 22, IMD said that there will be thunderstorms with light to moderate rain at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

On May 23, Sunday, coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Nilgiris, Theni, Erode and Krishnagiri districts, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to experience thunderstorms with light to moderate rain. For the rest of Tamil Nadu, IMD has predicted dry weather.

On May 24, Monday, IMD said that thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are likely to occur at isolated places over Western Ghat districts and dry weather is very likely to prevail over the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

On May 25, isolated places over Theni, Dindigul and Thenkasi districts will see heavy to very heavy rain and a thunderstorm with light to moderate rain is predicted for isolated places over the Western Ghat districts. Dry weather is very likely to prevail over the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, IMD said.

The low-pressure area that is very likely to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman sea around May 22 is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 24, the IMD has said. “It is very likely to move northwestwards and reach near Odisha-West Bengal coasts around May 26 morning,” the IMD said in a bulletin on Friday. The cyclonic storm will be named Cyclone Yaas (pronounced Yass), a name given by Oman.
