Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced Rs 1 crore compensation for the family of a police head constable who was allegedly killed by a chain-snatcher in Hosur last week.

In addition to the financial compensation, the government will also finance the higher education for the slain cop’s daughter.

“Initially, we had ordered Rs 5 lakh for the death of the constable. But we have increased it to one crore because I believe it is not enough. I have asked for revision of compensation amount for families of policemen who lose their lives in duty. The government will also bear the cost of higher studies his daughter,” said the CM in the state assembly.

Head constable Munuswamy was killed after he traced the accused following complaints of a pregnant woman being attacked by chain snatchers on a bike near Hosur railway station.

In the ensuing chase, the gang escaped to a three-storey building. When the police cornered Bijju in the building, the teenage accused stabbed Munuswamy.

Incidentally, the accused Bijju who was nabbed died while he was in a police custody.

According to reports, Bijju was 19 years old. While the police claim that he died of a heart attack, sources say that the custodial killing angle is also being looked into.
