A video of a pregnant woman being attacked and dragged on the road by a chain-snatcher has gone viral on social media. The incident happened in Chennai’s Pallavaram on Friday morning. Though the woman and her husband lodged a complaint with the police immediately after the incident, it wasn’t until Sunday, after the video went viral, that the police attended to it, according to reports

The visuals show a woman falling on the road and struggling to resist a man who seems to be snatching her chain. He then drags her on the road for about 15 feet as passers by rush to help her. He then leaves her and runs for around 15 feet and then goes away in a motorbike. The woman who was attacked has been identified as R Geetha (25), who is eight months pregnant. Geetha and her husband Ramachandran rushed to the police station immediately after the incident to lodge a complaint. However, it was only on Monday that the police registered an FIR on their complaint, after the video of the attack went viral.

A resident of Renuka Nagar in Pallavaram, Geetha was standing outside her house around 7.40 am when she was attacked. A report in Times of India said that two men on a motorbike stopped the bike a few metres away from where Geetha was standing. As she was praying at a small temple near her house, one of the men approached her and pulled the gold chain (11 sovereigns) from her neck. Since Geetha resisted the attack in an aim to save the chain, the man dragged her onto the road as seen in the video, before fleeing the scene.

Speaking to Puthiya Thalaimurai, Geetha said that she got injured on her arms and legs in the attack. The Pallavaram police started their investigation into the matter on Monday.
