Pillion-riding Chennai woman injured after being attacked by chain snatchers

The victim sustained head injuries after she was attacked by a chain-snatcher duo on another bike.

In another case of attempted chain snatching in the city, a 43-year-old resident of Avadi, fell from a bike and sustained head injuries after she was attacked by a chain-snatcher duo on another bike.

The victim,Valli, was riding pillion with her husband Ravi on the Maduravayol-Tambaram bypass road at 11pm on Sunday, when the incident took place, according to a TOI report.

As per the report, Valli and her husband who works for a private firm in Ambattur Industrial Estate, were returning from Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute inPorur after visiting Valli''s mother who is undergoing treatment in the hospital.

As the robbers tried to grab her chain, Valli held onto it tightly. However, her husband lost balance in the process, which led to both of them falling from the bike, according to a Deccan Chronicle report.

Despite retaining the gold chain, Valli was injured as a result of the fall and also lost consciousness. She was taken to MIOT hospital, according to TOI.

The chain-snatchers managed to escape amid the confusion, as per the report.

A case has been registered with the Maduravayol police and investigations are ongoing. Police officers are also going through the CCTV clips taken from the nearest toll plaza and other commercial places nearby to get leads on the robbers, the DC report says.

The incident comes just two months after another couple were assaulted by chain snatchers in February. The elderly couple, Jeyashri and Ashok, were walking down Chennai’s Kambar Street, when a man, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, snatched the chain on Jeyashri’s neck, causing her to fall. The CCTV footage of the incident showed the man dragging Jeyashri, while she resisted his attempts to snatch the chain.

In the same month, another incident of chain snatching was caught on camera in Valluvar nagar Arumbakkam. The footage showed a woman being dragged by chain snatchers on a motorbike. Menaka, who was wearing a 15-sovereigns gold chain, was walking to a wedding in the morning, when the incident occurred.
