A postgraduate student of PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in Coimbatore allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of the college on Tuesday morning.

Twenty-six-year-old Lakshmi was a student of general surgery and hails from Cochin in Kerala. She had completed her MBBS from Amrita University in Kollam and had joined the PSG institute for post-graduation just 40 days ago.

Dr Raghupathy, Resident Medical Officer of the college told media, “At 11:00 am, 26-year-old Lakshmi, jumped from the fourth floor of the college. She was immediately brought to the hospital, her condition was critical. We informed the police about the incident. She died after few hours,” he said.

Reportedly, she died due to heavy loss of blood because of her injuries. She was confirmed dead at 3 pm on Tuesday. Police has begun inquiry in the case.

Some students of the college told local media on conditions of anonymity that they suspected Lakshmi was distressed as she had allegedly been verbally abused by one of her professors. The professor, according to the students, was angry with the student for 'studying properly'. However, the dean of the college has denied such allegations.

There is also a section of students in the college who believe that the suicide could have been over anguish that a close family member was diagnosed with a medical problem.
