The twenty-nine-year-old man had fallen in love with his friend’s cousin. When the lady’s family came to know about it they decided to get them married. In 2009 they were formally engaged, the Times of India reported.Soon Thennarasu convinced Shanti that they "should live like a husband and wife" and they started visiting several places in and around the city. They had a sexual relationship, too. After a year Thennarasu stopped meeting Shanti and started ignoring her phone calls. When Shanti met the man who had promised to marry her, he said that his father did not agree for the marriage because she could not give enough dowry. He also told her that his father had found a new match for him. Shanti filed a complaint with the Ayanavaram police and an FIR was registered against Thenanrasu for rape and cheating, and against his father for criminal intimidation. The prosecution, however, could not prove the charge of rape. The man was awarded five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000.
