The Madras High Court has ordered issue of notice to Government Pleader of Puducherry on a petition seeking to restrain the government from diverting a part of its land for constructing MLA's office.

The petition was filed by Bharathiar Palkalaikoodam, which is a society of the multi-art institution, affiliated to Bharathiyar University, Puducherry.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh on Wednesday directed the Government Pleader to file the counter by March 31.

The matter pertains to diverting a part of two acres land belonging to the society for construction of MLAs office and other connected offices.

The Association submitted that at the instance of Director of Education, Puducherry, acquisition proceedings were initiated to acquire about four hectares of land.

Thereafter, construction was made for the Bharathiyar Mani Mandapam and the classroom and other facilities for undergraduate courses.

The petitioner contended that the South Western Block of the vacant land which was originally earmarked for housing art gallery and multipurpose hall was taken over by the PWD and private contractors were engaged to level the ground and also separate compound wall was erected for the construction of MLA s office.
