Parts of Tamil Nadu may witness light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms over the next couple of days, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has forecasted. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu between Tuesday and Friday. On Tuesday, thunderstorms with gusty winds of up to 40 to 50 kmph may be expected in isolated parts of the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low pressure is likely to develop over Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal to the southeast of Sri Lanka around April 25. "It is likely to intensify into a depression during subsequent 48 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards towards Tamilnadu coast across east coast of Srilanka.” (sic) it said. Thunderstorm and lightning have also been predicted at isolated places in Puducherry.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, Scientist Puviarasan of the Regional Meterological Department said, "There are chances of thunderstroms on April 29 in coastal areas of the state."

On Monday, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts experienced thunderstorms. Chennai saw overcast skies with a drop in temperature but no rainfall. Nilgirs, Kanyakumari and Salem too received thundershowers, according to one report in the Times of India. According to a report in The Hindu, Kancheepuram received 2cm rainfall 'due to convective activity, which usually follows a period of intense heat’.

As per a report in Skymet Weather, the city will continue to be dry and hot while sky conditions may be partly cloudy. Coastal regions of the state, including Chennai, may receive some rainfall between April 29 and 30.
