
Pongal is usually a busy time for people in Tamil Nadu. Relatives are home, big, elaborate feasts are prepared and there’s a lot of activity and visits planned for the next three days. For those of you who were not able to book tickets for films running in theatres, television becomes the next best option. And Pongal comes with redemption if you had missed out on a few big releases from last year.
While you’re busy enjoying this year’s bounty, we’ll make your channel browsing much easier with a list of films you can watch for this harvest festival from the comfort of your homes. From Karthi’s family entertainer Kadai Kutty Singam to crime thriller Ratsasan, here is the list of films and the TV schedules.
January 15 - Tuesday - Thai Pongal

Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 (VIP 2)
This sequel to Dhanush’s 2014 film has been scheduled for 11.30 am on Sun TV. Starring Dhanush, Kajol, Amala Paul and Vivek in lead roles, the film received a lukewarm response upon its release in 2017. But if you were a fan of the prequel, you might want to watch this one.
Sandakozhi 2
Vishal’s action entertainer, Sandakozhi 2, is a sequel to his 2005 hit titled Sandakozhi starring Meera Jasmine and Rajkiran in important roles. While the makers wanted to cash in on the phenomenal success of the prequel, Sandakozhi 2 did not have many things working for it. Starring Keerthy Suresh, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Rajkiran, the film might be an enjoyable watch if you’re a fan of action sequences.
Vijay TV
Saamy 2
This goes to show just how many sequels were released in 2018. Tune in to Vijay TV at 11.00 am if you’re a fan of police officer Aarusaamy aka Saamy. The film has Vikram, Aishwarya Rajesh, Prabhi, Bobby Simha and Keerthy Suresh in lead roles.
Pariyerum Perumal
If you haven’t already seen this award-winning film in theatres, now might be a good time. Directed by Mari Selvaraj and produced by Pa Ranjith, this film stars Kathir and Anandhi in lead roles. The film has been scheduled for 2.30 pm.
Zee Tamizh
Irumbuthirai
This crime thriller based on information theft starring Vishal did well at the box-office when it released last year. Tune in to Zee Tamizh at 11.30 am if you’re a fan of thrillers. The film also stars Samantha and Arjun in lead roles.
Junga
Starring Vijay Sethupathi, Sayeeshaa and Madonna Sebastian, this action comedy was directed by Gokul. While the film received a lukewarm reception at the box-office, it did have its funny moments. The film will play at 5.30 pm on Zee Tamizh.
Kalaingar TV
Merkku Thodarchi Malai
Another significant movie that received widespread acclaim following its release. Scheduled for 4.00 pm, the film has been directed by Lenin Bharathi and produced by Vijay Sethupathi. Interestingly, Pongal might be the right time to watch this film that captures the lives of plantation workers and farmers.
January 16 - Wednesday - Maatu Pongal

Ratsasan
This investigative thriller was the talk of the town as soon as it released. Directed by Ramkumar of Mundasupatti fame, the film starred Vishnu Vishal and Amala Paul in lead roles. Credited to be one of the best-made thrillers in recent times, Ratsasan will begin playing at 11.00 am on Sun TV.
Kalaingar TV
Semma
This comedy-drama starring GV Prakash Kumar has been scheduled for 10.00 am on Kalaingar TV. Directed by Vallikanthan the film also stars Yogi Babu, Mansoor Ali Khan, Sujatha Sivakumar and Kovai Sarala.
Vijay TV
Vada Chennai
Vetri Maaran’s first part of his gangster trilogy has been scheduled for 11.00 am on Vijay TV. The film stars Dhanush, Aishwarya Rajesh, Kishore, Ameer, Andrea, Samuthirakani and many others. Set in the 80s and the 90s, the film has a brilliant background score by Santosh Narayanan.
Kadai Kutty Singam
A more apt film for Pongal was not made last year and hence Kadai Kutty Singam is your best bet. Starring Karthi and a bevy of supporting stars, this film was appreciated for bringing together the “family” genre on screen after a long gap. The film will play at 2.30 pm on Vijay TV.
Zee Tamizh
Kolamaavu Kokila
Lady Superstar Nayanthara’s Kolamaavu Kokila, one of her best last year, has been scheduled for 12.00 pm on Zee Tamizh. If you’re a Nayanthara fan, you might not want to miss this one. Kolamaavu Kokila is the story of a seemingly innocent looking woman and what she’s capable of doing to survive and protect her family.
January 17 - Thursday - Kaanum Pongal

This comedy-drama starring Revathi and Prabhudeva in the lead will play at 11.00 am on Sun TV. This film fetched Revathi Best Comedy Actor (female) at the Vikatan Cine Awards this year.
