Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday said that there was no Tamil sentiment involved in demanding the release of seven convicts involved in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

He said that CM Jayalalithaa herself is not a Tamil and she did not know about how Tamils think.

He added that Tamils were ‘very angry’ about the then PM’s assassination.

“This lady (referring to CM Jayalalithaa), passed a resolution in the assembly stating that Tamil sentiment demands their release. Which Tamil sentiment? She is not even Tamil; she is a Kannadiga. She doesn’t know what the Tamils think. Tamils were very angry that Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination was given all this due.

“Thanks to Sonia Gandhi, they have already come down from capital punishment to life imprisonment. Now they want to let them free? We cannot allow that,” Swamy told ANI.

Swamy’s reaction came on the same day when the centre rejected TN government’s request to release all the seven convicts in the state.

The seven convicts are V. Sriharan alias Murugan, A.G. Perarivalan, T. Suthendraraja alias Santhan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Ravichandran and Nalini.

In March, it was reported when the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit had a guarded response to AIADMK's decision to remit the sentence of life imprisonment.
