The News Minute | March 16, 2015 | 09.20 am ISTDoes Karunanidhi want the Centre to have more powers than the state?  questioned AIADMK Chief J Jayalalithaa as she defended her party’s decision to support the land acquisition bill in the parliament .Rejecting DMK leader Karunanidhi’s accusations of double standards, she said that the AIADMK had opposed the Bill in 2013 as it had encroached on the powers of the state, reported PTI. "AIADMK had opposed the Bill in 2013 on grounds that it encroached on the powers of states and sought to acquire land for private institutions. This is the same stand taken by the party now also. That was why an amendment was mooted by AIADMK that exemptions should not be extended to private educational institutions and hospitals and this has been accepted by the central government,” she said in a press release. Earlier the bill had allowed companies like GAIL to acquire land. Since the present Bill gives more power to state governments without affecting the welfare of farmers, AIADMK supported it , she said . Karunanidhi had earlier criticised Jayalalithaa for supporting NDA’s bill.TweetFollow @thenewsminute
