Impose President's rule in TN if SC ban on Jallikattu defied: Subramanian Swamy

Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy is again in the news after he said that President’s Rule should be imposed in Tamil Nadu if the state went ahead with Jallikattu in contravention of the Supreme Court.

Swamy said on Thursday that if Jallikattu is held without waiting for the SC judgement and if TN fails to enforce the law, then the Centre must declare President’s Rule.

Swamy’s comment comes against the backdrop of the Naam Tamilar Katchi, a political party, organising a Jallikattu event in Thiruvanthipuram, Cuddalore district on Thursday, in violation of the SC order which banned the bull-taming sport in 2014.

“We don’t need permission from anyone. Next time we will organise it in Madurai,” members of Naam Tamilar Katchi told TV reporters. They later went on to say that Jallikattu would be held in other districts as well.

Earlier, in a major setback for Jallikattu supporters, the SC refused to pass orders before Pongal.

Terming it an “unfair request”, the apex court declined to hear an interlocutory application seeking interim relief on lifting the ban on the traditional bull-taming sport.  The court said it was not possible to deliver the verdict before Saturday, the beginning of the Pongal festival. SC said draft of judgment has been prepared but it is unfair to ask the bench to pass orders.
