As per the latest update, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intesify into a cyclonic storm in the next 48 hours, resulting in heavy rains in north coastal areas of the state. 

"The depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards in past six hours and today it is located about 90 km east of Chennai and 70 kms from the (eastern) Coast", the Met department said.

Following heavy rains in Chennai on Monday night, the met department had predicted that light rain will continue till Wednesday.

The met department told The News Minute, “There has been heavy rains from Monday night but there will be light rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. In some parts of south Tamil Nadu, there will be heavy rain.”

However, weather blogger Pradeep John states that the rains will peak from Tuesday evening or night. He writes, “The rains are going to intermittent and will get heavy at times and from evening / Night the rains will be heavy. The Low Pressure Area is expected to move towards Chennai Coast in the evening,” he wrote on his FB page.

He added, “Low Lying areas will see lots of water stagnation after tonight rains.”
