Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister (MAUD) KT Rama Rao on Friday laid the foundation stone for a three-km long flyover and underpass project, which will cover two crucial junctions in Botanical Garden, Kothaguda and Kondapur.

Apart from the flyover, a 470-metre underpass was also being constructed at Kothaguda junction, to facilitate traffic flow from Allwyn Crossroads towards Gachibowli. All these works were being taken up at a cost of Rs 263 crore.

The Minister also appealed to the people to bear with the temporary inconvenience being caused in view of the different development works being taken up in the city.

Pointing out that the city was greatly depending on private vehicles, KTR said that the government’s main aim was to strengthen public transport in the city and promote the extensive utilisation of the same.

The Minister stated that when compared to Mumbai, Hyderabad lagged behind in utilising public transport facilities. In Mumbai, nearly 70% of the people use trains and buses for transportation while 30% relied on private transportation. On the contrary, in Hyderabad, 70% traveled in private vehicles and 30% use public transportation facilities, KTR said.

As a result, this was not only creating traffic issues but was also increasing pollution levels in the city, he said.

“Nearly 80,000 passengers are traveling on Metro trains every day on the 30-km stretch from Nagole to Miyapur. Once all the Metro routes become operational, about 14 lakh passengers were expected to travel on the Hyderabad Metro every day. This apart, MMTS phase II works were also being expedited. The state government has sanctioned the requisite funds for taking up the works,” a press release by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) quoted the Minister as saying.

Others who were present during the laying of the foundation stone included, Telangana Transport Minister Mahender Reddy, Hyderabad Mayor Dr B Rammohan, Serlingampally MLA A Gandhi, GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy and various other public representatives and senior officials.
