TN Congress president EVKS Elangovan is facing strong opposition from his own party members on allegations of him being dictatorial and acting against party lines. Infighting with the TNCC has been a regular feature of the state unit, with several camps working at cross-purposes.

Many including heavyweights like former union minister P. Chidambaram, M. Krishnaswamy and K.V. Thangkabalu have reportedly called for the sacking of Elangovan at a meeting with  party vice-president Rahul Gandhi at the capital on Saturday, reports TNIE.

The accusations lined up against the current state chief of party is of pursing acrimonious activities in the name of leading the party, ignoring several veterans while being untoward reactions  on sensitive matters like GK Vasan’s possible return  to the party.

It is understood that the delegation had asked for party president Sonia Gandhi’s intervention on the matter and wanted a leader who was acceptable by all sections within the party.

The Congress party has never not been a reckoning force in Tamil Nadu with either the ruling AIDMK or the DMK coming to power in the past. With assembly elections around the corner and just five MLAs in the state assembly, the Congress party could do well without any further factions breaking out in the party.

More importantly, it is the first time since the Delhi assembly elections that the Congress will go for polls and fight to remain as a prominent political entity nationally, considering assembly elections are pivotal in nominating Rajya Sabha seats.

However, this is not the first faux pas on part of the Congress in the state when only in the last month, there was a loss of face when in an apparent miscommunication between the central unit and state unit resulted in a last minute cancellation of a party function which was organized for the All India Mahila Morcha General Secretary Nagma.
