The police have finally arrested a local DMDK leader Subramani for the August 15 riots in Seshasamudaram village in Villupuram, in which nearly 10 homes were burnt and more than 40 were injured.

The police said that he had instigated the riots for political gains, says The New Indian Express.

Subramani, belonging to the Vanniyar caste, is reported to have confessed to have had carefully engineered the tensions and violence.

It is reported by TNIE that he gave Dalits in the colony money to build a temple car. But when the Dalits wanted to take the temple car for a procession, Subramani got along with other members of his caste and opposed it. But when the Dalits sought and got permission for it anyway, he engineered the violence along with others, says TNIE.

On August 15, nearly 500 members of the Vanniyar caste are said to have attacked the Dalit colony in the village. Petrol bombs were hurled, policemen and villagers were attacked.

Situation has remained tense in the district of Villupuram ever since.
