Dengue, H1N1 cases rise in TN, doctors advise medical help instead of self-medication

Tamil Nadu public health officials and doctors are emphasising the need to take precaution as cases of dengue and H1N1 are increasing in the state. They are also trying to highlight the need for people falling sick to seek medical help rather than resort to self-medication. According to a report in The Hindu, the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine TS Selvavinayagam has said there are 421 active cases of H1N1 and 334 cases of dengue in the state. He added that H1N1, dengue and COVID-19 are under control but it is important to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour.

The dean of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital E Theranirajan said that the seven patients with dengue and nine patients with H1N1 were admitted there. According to The Hindu, he said that these cases have increased because of seasonal change and added that it was important to look for symptoms and seek medical help. The dean said that symptoms of dengue include three days of fever that does not respond to paracetamol, rashes on the fourth day of fever, pain behind the eyes, and occipital headaches. The symptoms of H1N1 include drowsiness, fever that does not go with medication, and reduced intake of food.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Institute of Child Health and Children’s Hospital, S Ezhilarasi said that there has been no rise in cases among children. The Directorate of Public Health has issued guidelines on how to categorise seasonal influenza during home isolation, testing, treatment and hospitalisation. It also prescribed dosage and duration for viral anti-influenza medication.

Tamil Nadu registered 535 fresh coronavirus cases on Wednesday, September 28, pushing the total caseload to 35.82 lakh while the death toll remained unchanged at 38,046 with zero fresh fatalities. Chennai added 104 new cases followed by Chengalpet 54, Coimbatore 43 while the remaining cases were spread across other districts. The state capital leads among districts with 2,389 active cases and overall 7,90,286 coronavirus cases.
