Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry until Tuesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted. As far as Chennai is concerned, the RMC said, “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Rain or thundershowers is likely to occur in some areas during evening / night.” Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 36 and 24-26 degree Celsius over the next 48 hours.

The rains, which will come as a relief to the state, follow the India Meteorological Centre's observations that a cyclonic circulation persists between 5.8 km and 7.6 km above mean sea level over coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood. A low pressure area is likely to develop over north east Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around September 2, the IMD also predicted.

According to a report in the Times of India, rains lashed several neighbourhoods in the city including Aminjikarai, Choolaimedu, Vadapalani, Shenoy Nagar, Anna Nagar and T Nagar, Guindy, Adambakkam, and Nanganallur.

Meanwhile, city-based weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs the popular Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman, wrote that the stratiform clouds have been responsible for the rains. “Main intense clouds of the Thunderstorms have moved into the Sea. Steady rains will continue from the Stratiform clouds henceforth for sometime. One more small cell is seen developing near Takkolam. But that will go down below Tambaram. Hopefully Chengalpet gets rains from the other small one,” he stated.
