The News Minute| April 4, 2015| 09.19 am ISTAfter BJP MP Dilip K Gandhi’s remark that there existed no Indian study to show that the consumption of tobacco could cause cancer, the Cancer Institute in Chennai has listed out 65 studies that could prove him wrong. Saying that the 65 references had been compiled in a day, Dr. E Hemanth Raj, the former Vice Chairman of the Cancer Institute said that surely over a 100 studies could be found with more time, reported New Indian Express . Gandhi’s remarks had come after the parliamentary committee he headed asked for the April 1 deadline to increase the size of large graphic warnings on tobacco products to be deferred.Dr. V Shanta, the Chairperson of the Institute, also said that the message by Gandhi would send the wrong message to people. She also said that the government needs to honour the work being done and also understand that there was no lag in research, said the reportThe statistics from studies revealed that 5800 new cases of cancer were detected in the city each year of which 40 percent were tobacco-related. According to the report, lung cancer incidence had moved from 4th place in the year 1984 to first place of which it was established that 80 percent of the cases were from tobacco usage.
