A 19-year-old mentally challenged girl was strangled to death by her father on Wednesday, just a week after she was left in his custody.

Unable to take care of her, Adikesavan, who is an auto driver killed her at Nerkundram in Chennai, reports TNIE.

According to reports, Kausalya was left at Adhikesavan's house by his estranged wife Mohana, who then absconded. The couple also have a son named Ajit who is 17 years old.

“The couple had separated nine years ago and Mohana decided to take Kausalya along with her, while Ajit was staying with the father. Mohana worked as a helper in a private special school in Nerkundram where her daughter was admitted and undergoing treatment," an investigating officer told TNIE.

Ajit reportedly took leave from college for over a week to take care of his sister.

"On several occasions, she became violent and flung dolls and even steel utensils at people. She also damaged the television and other household items and frequently suffered from seizures," an officer told ToI.

But on Wednesday, when Ajit left for college, Kausalya was left alone with her father. She allegedly made it difficult for him to get ready for work. Even neighbours tried to help but to no avail. Irritated, Adhikesavan strangulated her with a nylon rope. Following this, the father surrendered to the police himself.

Her body was sent to the Kilpauk Medical college for post-mortem.
