If you've ever witnessed a traffic violation in Chennai and wondered what you can do about it apart from just outraging on social media, help is here. On Friday, the Chennai city police launched an app titled 'GCTP citizen service' that allows members of the general public to upload complaints and pictures of traffic violations in real time.

According to one report in the Times of India, the app will be launched on Android and iOS next week. A number of violations including but not limited to helmet-less riding, jumping signals, illegal parking, triple riding, cell phone driving and even recklessly driven MTC buses can be reported to the traffic police. The app allows users to take photographs of violations and upload them. The newspaper, however, reports that the app will not allow users to upload a photograph through the phone's gallery. Citizens can only use the camera feature on the app to take and upload a photo in real time.

This essentially means that the user must take photos on the spot through the app and upload them. The feature prevents users from uploading pre-existing photos and aims to prevent misuse.

The Deccan Chronicle reported that users need to register their name, mobile number and other details after downloading the app. These details will be stored in the police database. GPS enables the registration of location and time coordinates.

As per the newspaper, Chennai city police Commissioner AK Vishwanathan explained that senior police officers would view the complaints registered on the app. “People can post information about such violations on the application for further action. They can capture a photograph or a video and upload it. This application will prove to be of immense help for us to solve issues. This is an empowering app for citizens which provides access to various services, information and utilities related to the transport sector. It is convenient to citizens and this transparent system is available for free download from the Google play store.” he said.

According to a report in The New Indian Express, citizens could upload complaints, even if it involves police vehicles. In addition to this, citizens may give their feedback and suggestions on improving the traffic conditions in the city. “The app enables a person learn if there is any challan pending against the vehicle, take photos or videos of violators, lodge complaints and give suggestions to the police and to check if the vehicle you are buying second-hand has any penalties pending,” Sree Abhinav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) East, was quoted as saying.
