Around 350 stranded citizens of Chennai and the adjoining districts have been rescued by the Coast Guard, over the last two days. A team of 50 Coast Guard personnel on 10 boats braved strong currents and poisonous snakes, during the rescue operations. Another ship is patrolling in the seas to provide assistance to any fishing boat in distress besides providing security cover.

Two ships each, from Vizag and Mumbai are due to arrive in Chennai with more boats and safety equipment, to augment the ongoing relief operations. Since Chennai airport is not operational, the Coast Guard has flown in three Chetak helicopters and one twin engine Advanced Light Helicopter from Goa and Porbandar, for aerial dropping of relief materials.

The Coast Guard is also providing freshly cooked food in the worst-affected areas besides giving first-aid through doctors and paramedics.
