Normal life was affected by a dawn-to-dusk hartal called by BJP in Thrissur district on Saturday in protest against killing of its party worker allegedly by members of CPI (M) at Idavilangu in Kodungallur area.

Shops and business establishments in the district remained closed and the public transport system was also affected because of the strike, district administration officials said.

However, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operated its services to far away destinations.

Sporadic violence was reported from the district. A CPI(M) local committee office was allegedly burnt down in Idavilangu. CPI(M) protested against the attack on its office, allegedly by BJP-RSS workers.

Police said security was tightened to maintain law and order situation.

BJP worker Pramod, who was injured in an attack allegedly by CPI(M) workers, succumbed to his wounds on Friday at a private hospital in Thrissur.

The 38-year-old had sustained head injuries after he was allegedly hit by a brick following a clash during a victory rally taken out by CPI(M) workers at Idavilangu on May 19.
