Students from the College of Engineering, Guindy, have alleged that their institution has cancelled a college fest after the former voiced support for the bull taming sport Jallikattu.

On Wednesday, about 200 students protested in the college premises in support of Jallikattu. This, the students say, led to the dean cancelling Techofes, the techo-cultural festival, and symposiums in the college scheduled for February.

Speaking to The News Minute, a third-year engineering student from the college said, “Around 10 am on Wednesday, students of my college conducted a protest asking for Jallikattu to be allowed in Tamil Nadu. The protest went on till 12 in the afternoon. The dean and faculty had repeatedly tried to stop it.”

The student said that the dean had already instructed students not to conduct protest during college hours. “The dean had instructed on a class representatives’ WhatsApp but the protest still took place,” the student said.

The student added that the identity cards of the students who protested were taken away, however, it was later returned. But because of this, the decision to cancel Techofes and symposiums of different departments were taken on Wednesday.

According to the students, the dean sent them a message stating, “Good morning my dear students. There are so many ways to represent your concern about Jallikattu. Instead if you boycott the classes then I will not be in a position to support you and you may have to meet the consequences. It has been decided in HODs meeting, all symposiums and Techofes 2017 stand cancelled.”

The News Minute tried to contact the dean’s office, but he was unavailable for comment.

He has however denied sending such a message to the students and told The New Indian Express that the college events might be cancelled as they were unable to secure sponsorship from companies. He added that there will be a meeting of the heads of departments next week to discuss the issue.
