A B.Tech student of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Madras allegedly committed suicide at the hostel premises in early hours of Monday. Rahul G Prasad was in his final year at he institute.

Although, the time of the death is not yet clear, the hostel authorities alerted the police around 4 AM on Monday morning after he was found hanging from his room in the third floor of Ganga Hostel.

A suicide case has been registered and police investigations are underway.

There has been no confirmation of a suicide note being found near the body.

Speaking to The News Minute, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director of IIT Madras confirmed that the student belonged to the Electrical department.

The student is believed to be a native of Kollam, Kerala.                                               

This is the second such incident in the two months at IIT Madras. In September, an M.Tech student from Andhra Pradesh committed suicide reportedly due to academic pressure.

The 23-year old M Tech scholar had just returned from his hometown before he took the drastic step.

These two are not solitary cases of suicides in IIT Madras. There have been numerous occasions of pupils committing suicide before in IIT Madras and other premier educational institutions of the country including other IITs owing to the massive stress the students are subjected to while undergoing their courses.
