After an alleged attempt to rape a 28-year-old woman on Thursday near Gangavalli in Salem, the woman hung herself in her home on Friday. 

The deceased was identified as C Deepa of Krishnapuram. She was a homemaker while Chinnadurai was an auto driver. 

The couple have two sons aged 10 and 8.

According to The Times of India, police said Deepa was alone in her house on Thursday afternoon when her neighbour M Rajiv Gandhi, approached her in an inebriated condition. 

He allegedly attempted to rape her. When she resisted, he attacked her with a knife. Hearing her cries, neighbours rushed to her house and tried to nab Rajiv . But he managed to flee the scene. 

Later, Deepa and her husband lodged a complaint with the Gangavalli police, who re portedly issued them a copy of the community service register.

On Friday, Rajiv's parents quarreled with Deepa and allegedly abused her verbally. When alerted, the Gangavalli police reached the spot and pacified them. Deepa then committed suicide by hanging herself at her house around 8am. 

The Gangavalli police then sent the body to Attur Government Hospital for a postmortem.

Shortly after, the kin of the deceased staged a protest on the premises of the hospital, demanding action against the errant police officials. They alleged that police negligence was the only reason for her death.

According to R Ramesh, a kin of the deceased, Rajiv was a habitual offender and the Police had earlier arrested him in connection with a rape case. “He came out on bail a few days back,“ Suresh added.

The Gangavalli police has registered a case under Section 174 (suspicious death) of CrPC.
