Moving away from the earlier stipulation that 70% of stunt artistes in any film scene being shot in Hyderabad must be from the Telugu Stunt Union, the members of the South Indian Cine Stunt Directors and Stunt Artistes Union have agreed on a 50:50 ratio with the Telugu Stunt Union in Hyderabad.

This agreement comes after almost eight years of long drawn deliberations between the unions.

Speaking to TNM, stunt master ‘Supreme’ Sundar said, “Earlier the ratio was at 70:30, where priority was given to the place where the film was being shot. This limited the scope of many stunt artistes who had great skills.”

While all the five major participants who form the union – Chennai (Tamil), Hyderabad (Telugu), Bombay (Hindi), Kolkata (Bengali) and Bengaluru (Kannada) – have agreed to the 50:50 ratio, the official documents have been inked between Tamil and Telugu artistes unions only.

“Everyone has agreed and we’ll soon sign the papers with the others to make it official,” Sundar Master said.

According to 70:30 ratio, if a film was being shot in Hyderabad, 70% of the stunt artistes had to be from the Telugu union. The numbers were reversed if it was being shot in Tamil Nadu. After this agreement, the number of artistes engaged would become equal.

Stunt Master Danger Mani, who has worked in films like Lingaa, Papanasam, Goli Soda, etc. shares that this agreement will benefit both the Masters and the fighters. “This will increase opportunities and also will make work easier for us. While working on a different language film, having equal number of stunt fighters from both sides will help us choreograph stunts better,” he says.

Upcoming Stunt Master Mahesh too shares that this will be most beneficial for young stunt masters. “Tamil Nadu has some of the most talented stunt masters and fighters. When we get equal opportunity, I’m sure it will be of great use to everyone,” he adds.
