Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has said that he would not mix politics and cinema. With just months to go for the 2019 parliamentary elections, speculations have been rife over the moves of newbie politicians Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.

Kamal had recently said that his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, would contest in all 39 Lok Sabha seats from the state. Speaking to reporters at the Chennai Airport on Thursday, Kamal said, “Acting is business. Politics is my desire. I won't mix the two.”

When asked how the public should view him playing a political leader in his upcoming film Indian 2, he said, “It has to be seen as a leader acting. More than that, if there are any relevant social messages, I will come out and speak about it. There is no need to say it only through cinema anymore.”

A day after two women below the age of 50 visited the Sabarimala, violence engulfed Kerala with clashes in several districts between political groups for and against women’s entry into the Ayyappa temple. Stating his views on this, Kamal said, “A violent environment is being created by the right wing.”

In an interview with ANI Editor Smitha Prakash, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was asked whether his party would ally with Rajinikanth or Kamal Hasan in an attempt to increase the BJP's footprint in south India. PM Modi said, “We always try to walk with everyone, those want to walk with us, and those we want to walk with. It is linked with our principle to strengthen regional aspirations.”

When asked about this, Kamal said, "His stand is that he will ally with us if we go to him. Our stance is whether we will go. We will talk about it in a separate meeting."

He also said that it was good that AIADMK MPs had been suspended for creating a ruckus in parliament, on Wednesday.

On the announcement of bye-polls in late DMK supremo M Karunanidhi’s constituency, Kamal said, “I'm happy that they have announced it at least now.”
