Tamil Nadu has not forgotten the pregnant woman who lost her life in Trichy after a policeman who wanted to check the vehicle, kicked the bike in which she was travelling with her husband. A year later, a similar incident has taken place, this time in Kallakurichi and the victim is a 63-year-old woman.

Ayyammal, 63, was sitting on the pillion seat of the two-wheeler which her son Senthil Kumar was riding. As the duo travelled on the Kallakurichi- Kachirapalayam road in Villupuram district, a police constable Santhosh Kumar signalled at Senthil Kumar to stop his bike. However, Senthil Kumar allegedly tried to ride past Santhosh Kumar without paying heed to his signal to stop the bike. In an attempt to stop the vehicle, Santhosh Kumar allegedly pulled Ayyammal’s hand and she fell off the bike and died on the spot due to severe head injuries. Reports also state that Santhosh Kumar and other policemen who were present at the scene attacked Senthil Kumar and in the brawl, Ayyammal also received blows which made her lose her balance and fall off the bike.

The incident led to arguments between the angered relatives, onlookers and the police personnel. While the relatives accused the police of using undue force on Senthil and Ayyammal, the police claimed that Senthil was driving under the influence of alcohol when the incident happened.

Following the incident, Villupuram SP S Jayakumar on Monday suspended the five policemen who were at the spot during the incident. Training Sub Inspector Velmurugan, Special Sub Inspector Mani, Constables Santhosh Kumar, Ilaiyaraja and Selvam are the policemen who have been suspended pending inquiry.

Speaking to TNM, Jayakumar said that the policemen have been suspended and that a departmental inquiry has been initiated against them. He also added that the suspension will have an impact on promotions and salary hikes for the policemen.
