A 23-year-old woman died on Monday after she fell into a well, while attempting to take a selfie with her fiance in Chennai.
The incident occurred near Avadi, as per reports. T Mercy Steffi, a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Pattabiram and D Appu, who lives in Navajeevan nagar in Pattabiram, were recently engaged and were set to be married in January. They both worked atin a private company in the vicinity.
On Monday around 3 pm, Appu and Mercy were going around the locality on Appu’s bike when they decided to go into a farm in Kandigai village on the Vandalur-Minjur road. Since the farm had an agricultural well on its premises, Mercy had allegedly asked Appu to take pictures of her at the well. The well was an old-fashioned one, which had stairs on its inside. The couple, with the intention of taking a selfie, descended the stairs and sat on them. Mercy sat on the edge of a step and tried to take a selfie of them, when she slipped and fell into the well. Appu, who caught hold of Mercy, also fell into the well.
Hearing Appu’s cries for help, a farmer who was nearby rushed to their rescue and saved Appu. However, his efforts to find Mercy were in vain. They alerted the Fire and Rescue Services personnel who arrived at the spot and fished out Mercy’s body from the well. The police registered an FIR and sent Mercy’s body for postmortem at the Government Stanley Hospital. Appu was also admitted to a private hospital to treat injuries.
A 22-year-old man recently fell to his death while attempting to take a selfie in a waterfall in Tiruvannamalai district. Murali, a resident of Vaniyambadi and his friend Manikandan had gone to the Beeman falls in Jamanamaruthur village in Tiruvannamalai district when the incident occurred. Murali had climbed up on a rock to take selfies when he slipped on the algae and fell down, sustaining severe head injuries and fractures. Manikandan, who tried to catch hold of Murali, slipped and fell down as well. Murali died on the way to a hospital, while Manikandan was admitted for treatment.
