In another shocking incident in Chennai, a 14-year-old girl was raped by three men, reportedly for over the last six months. The crime came to light when a visit to the hospital revealed that the minor, who has intellectual disabilities, was four months pregnant. The accused, including the distant relative of the survivor, were arrested by the Guduvanchery police on Tuesday.

The accused were identified as Paramasivam, Chidambaram and Shankar. They are construction workers, who reportedly worked with the victim’s grandmother. But according to the police, Paramasivam was a distant relative of the girl's father and had befriended her through him.

The 14-year-old lived with her grandmother, who would often leave the house for work. Her younger siblings would go to school, leaving her alone at their house in Guduvanchery.

The sexual assault reportedly first began in February.

A police officer connected to the case says, "Paramasivam would often visit the house as soon as everybody left home. He would call himself the girl's chitappa (uncle). In fact, once, when the girl screamed, neighbours rushed home to check on the girl. However, he said she was screaming for no reason and that he had just held her hand. Since she has intellectual disabilities, the neighbours bought this explanation," says.

The rape would have also gone unnoticed for longer if the survivor had not visited a hospital.

"The survivor once accompanied her younger sister to a hospital as the latter was unwell. The girl, however, fainted in the hospital. When the doctors examined her, they found that she was four months pregnant," says the police officer.

“The girl's parents and grandmother personally know the culprits," the officer adds.

The police have charged all three men under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act. A magistrate's court in the city remanded them in judicial custody.

This shocking case comes to light just two months after 17 men were arrested in Ayanavaram for the rape of an 11-year-old girl with a hearing disability. For seven months, the young girl was reportedly raped by security guards, plumbers and carpenters at her apartment complex. The Chennai Police recently filed the final report in the case. The Ayanavaram All Women police station submitted the report to the Mahila Court in the Madras High Court.

On September 5,  provisions of the Goondas Act were invoked on the accused so that they cannot come out of prison on bail.
